Stephen Procter: Lines through Light
National Art Glass Gallery: 6 December 2009 - 15 March 2009
Lines Through Light on display in the National Art Glass Gallery, 2008-09
This exhibition presents the work of one of Australia's most distinguished glass artists, Stephen Procter. Encompassing Procter's work in glass and his substantial graphic and painted oeuvre from the 1970s to 2001, Lines Through Light explores the artist's journey through his immediate environment and the relationship of the individual with the landscape.
Stephen, who passed away in 2001, was a man of distinction who combined passion for both art glass and life. He leaves behind a legacy of outstanding accomplishments as an artist, and the international reputation he developed as head of the Glass Workshop at the Australian National University School of Art.
Stephen's examination of the natural landscape was a powerful motivation for his glasswork, painting, and brush and ink drawing: he had the ability to lift the ordinary into the realm of the extraordinary. Lines Through Light is a contemplative experience where the minimal, zen-like quality of the works fits serenely within the quiet simplicity of the Glass Gallery. These characteristics and principles made Procter an inspiration not only as a glass artist but as an educator, mentor and human being.
