Old Narrandera Road Upgrade

Council is upgrading a section of Pine Gully Road and Old Narrandera Road to improve safety and traffic flow.

Project Updates

05 Sep 2023

Temporary closure of Old Narrandera Road

Old Narrandera Road will be closed to all through traffic from Thursday 7 September until Wednesday 4 October, weather permitting.

The road will be closed between the Olympic Highway and Pine Gully Road to allow for the next stage of the current upgrade project.

Local River Road traffic will maintain access under traffic control and detours will be in place for all other traffic.

The first stage of works which has focused on Pine Gully Road, between Old Narrandera Road and Muttama Parade, will be completed in the coming days.

This will see the following completed:

  • earthworks to form the new left turn slip lane onto Old Narrandera Road
  • stabilisation of the road base
  • installation of two median islands
  • installation of culverts to improve drainage.

Project Information

This upgrade forms part of Pine Gully Road Corridor Works servicing the residents of Gobbagombalin, Estella and Charles Sturt University.

This project will increase the capacity of these roads to accommodate both the present and future traffic demands in the area.

The upgrade includes:

  • reconstructing pavement of Old Narrandera Road from a point approximately 100m west of the Olympic Highway intersection to, and including, the Pine Gully Road intersection
  • widening this section of Old Narrandera Road from 2 to 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction)
  • creating a dedicated right turn lane onto Pine Gully Road from Old Narrandera Road
  • creating a channelised T-intersection with a left turn slip lane out of Pine Gully Road onto Old Narrandera Road
  • reconstructing approximately 100m of Pine Gully Road pavement from the Old Narrandera Road intersection
  • improving drainage by replacing culverts and constructing table drains
  • installing new signage, concrete medians and guardrails.

The upgrade is expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete (August to October 2023), weather depending.

Benefits of this project

This project will:

  • make your journey smoother by improving the condition of Old Narrandera Road between the Olympic Highway and Pine Gully Road
  • improve traffic flow in the area by doubling the number of lanes on this section of road from 2 to 4
  • improve traffic flow and safety with new dedicated right and left turning lanes for vehicles
  • improve safety with the installation of new guard rails, raised concrete medians, signage and line markings.

There will be some disruption for road users during this upgrade, with a temporary speed limit reduction, lane closures, and road closures with detours and traffic control in place at different stages of the project.
