Lord Baden Powell Drive Upgrade

completed

Together with the Australian Government we are upgrading Lord Baden Powell Drive to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety around the Museum of the Riverina and Botanic Gardens precinct.

Project Updates

Intermittent lane closures

Preliminary works for the project to upgrade Lord Baden Powell Drive between Macleay Street and Captain Cook Drive have started.

These works include approved vegetation clearing and the creation of a temporary access road to ensure visitors and staff can access Kurrajong and the Museum of the Riverina at all stages of construction.

Due to wet and boggy conditions in the road reserve, the contractor will need to undertake some of the required clearing from Lord Baden Powell Drive itself.

When this is happening, it will be necessary to close one lane of traffic. The other lane will remain open under traffic control to ensure traffic can continue to flow.

The first of these closures are taking place Tuesday 11 to Friday 14 July between 7am and 5pm.

To avoid delays we suggest motorists and other road users consider taking an alternative route if possible.

There will be further lane closures over the coming month. Updates relating to these lane closures will be posted online at livetraffic.com

Project Information

The upgrade of Lord Baden Powell Drive on the western face of Willans Hill is expected to get underway in mid-2023, weather permitting.

The works will improve access to the Museum of the Riverina, Kurrajong Industries, Wagga Steam and Vintage Engine Museum.

For pedestrians, the project will make it easier and safer to cross Lord Baden Powell Drive from the Botanic Gardens to the Museum of the Riverina and other businesses along that side of the road.

For motorists, the upgrade prioritises safety of vehicles exiting the Museum of the Riverina access road or Kurrajong and those already travelling on Lord Baden Powell Drive.

The upgrade will include:

  • installing two refuge crossings to increase the safety of pedestrians crossing the road between the Museum of the Riverina and the Botanic Gardens
  • approved vegetation clearance to ensure maximum possible line of sight for vehicles approaching the refuge islands and for pedestrians of approaching vehicles
  • reshaping the intersection of Lord Baden Powell Drive and the Museum of the Riverina access lane to improve the safety of vehicle movements
  • a new entrance to Kurrajong
  • reconstruction of road pavement and surface.

Council and contractors are working to complete the works within about 36 weeks. However, like all road and construction projects, this timeline is subject to weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.

This project is funded by the Australian Government, NSW Government and Wagga Wagga City Council.

Once completed, the project will:

  • make the precinct livelier and more accessible by improving the connection between the Botanic Gardens and museum
  • improve pedestrian and vehicle safety around the precinct.

There will be some disruption for road users during work, with a temporary speed limit reduction, detours and traffic control in place at different stages.

Lord Baden Powell Drive will remain open during early works with a reduced speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour in place during work hours.

After early works, when road construction starts, a full road closure will be necessary. Staff and visitors will maintain access to the Museum of the Riverina.

The full road closure and detours will be communicated in advance so road users can plan ahead.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, or as otherwise advised.
