Submit a request
Each year Council plants around 1200 street and parkland trees in the CBD and suburbs.
Street trees are planted over the winter between June and August. Street tree requests are accepted until 30 March each year, with requests after that date being planted the following year.
If you would like a street tree, please submit a Customer Request for a new tree.
Don't plant without permission
Trees should not be planted on a nature strip or roadside reserve without prior permission from Council, as there are underground services that may affect the electricity, sewerage, or gas on your street!
You can find more information about what you can and can't do when it comes to landscaping your nature strip on our Nature Strips & Footpaths page.
Caring for a new street tree
Council’s tree planting team will look after your new street tree until it is properly established. This includes watering, mulching, fertilising, and formative pruning. After this period, our tree maintenance team will continue its care.
You are welcome to help by giving the tree extra water, removing weeds, trimming grass around the base, and tidying mulch edges—just take care not to damage the trunk. Please leave the tree guard in place and avoid using a whipper-snipper near the trunk.
Once established, most street trees will not need extra watering. However, trees less than five years old benefit from occasional deep watering during dry periods.
Pruning and pest control are Council’s responsibility. Please do not prune or lop a public tree yourself, as incorrect pruning can seriously harm the tree. If you think a street tree needs pruning or other maintenance, contact us by submitting a pruning request to arrange an inspection by a qualified arborist.
