Relocating other buildings and structures
Other buildings proposed to be relocated to a site for use as a dwelling may include:
- Construction site offices, amenity or storage buildings (new or used)
- Shipping containers
- A building (including a dwelling) that has been constructed and used on another property and is proposed to be removed and transported to the site
Do I need approval from Council if i am proposing one of these options?
Yes, you will need to apply for either:
- A development application (from Council) and a Construction Certificate (from either Council or a private certifier), OR;
- A Complying Development Certificate (CDC) from either Council or a private certifier.
You will also require Section 68 approval from Council for:
- Sewer and stormwater connections and works in serviced areas.
- Onsite sewage management system and associated sewer works in un-serviced areas.
Pre-used relocatable homes
If you are installing a pre-used relocatable home from another site, it is recommended that you contact Council to determine the approval and documentation requirements.
What else should I be aware of?
It is recommended that you seek planning advice to confirm whether a dwelling is permitted on your land, especially if the allotment is vacant (i.e. does not contain an existing dwelling).
Before proceeding, it is strongly advised that you engage a competent building designer to help determine whether the building or structure can be retrofitted to meet Council requirements, including the provisions of the National Construction Code. Converting a building or structure not originally designed as a dwelling to meet these standards can be challenging and costly.
