Parklets to activate Fitzmaurice Street

Eleven parklets have been installed along both sides of Fitzmaurice Street as part of a project to improve the amenity of the area.

Council was successful in securing a $271,000 grant from the NSW Government's 'Your High Street' program, which promotes permanent improvements to the amenity and functionality of streets for the benefit of local economies and public well-being.

The funding has already provided the installation of decorative lighting along Fitzmaurice Street and safety lighting along the levee bank to the Riverside precinct.

The public seating platforms provide additional spaces for the community to socialise and connect when using Fitzmaurice Street.

Project Information

Wagga Wagga City Council was successful in securing a $271,000 grant from the NSW Government’s ‘Your High Street’ program which promotes permanent improvements to the amenity and functionality of streets for the benefit of local economies and public well-being.

The funding will give the Fitzmaurice Street precinct a significant lift to help stimulate activity and enhance connections to the riverfront and Active Travel Plan routes.

Beautification and activation of the high street includes the installation of lighting and parklets with bike features. These additions will improve attractiveness, safety accessibility, and walkability of the street.

Decorative lighting has been installed on trees along Fitzmaurice Street and creates a safer more inviting pathway connection to road.

Safety lighting has been installed along the Wiradjuri Trail pathway between the Riverside precinct and Fitzmaurice Street.

A parklet is typically the extension of the footpath into a parking area, however in this project we are preserving the parking and utilising the wide footpaths instead.

The platform incorporates seating and bicycle racks to create more space and amenities for the community to linger, socialise and connect.

The parklets are expected to increase footfall and the capacity for trade for businesses.

Eleven structures will be installed along both sides of Fitzmaurice Street.

Design

The parklets will be constructed of durable materials requiring minimal maintenance.

Streetmix

The parklets will be installed on the wide footpaths in underutilised areas near restaurants and retailers. The placement complies with pedestrian requirements.

Locations

The Riverside Strategic Master Plan identified opportunities to better connect the levee shared path to the Fitzmaurice Street commercial facilities and historic buildings.

This project was funded by the NSW Government through the 'Your High Street' grant program.

The beautification project aims to:

  • Improve connection to Fitzmaurice Street for pedestrians and cyclists who utilise the Active Travel Plan shared paths and Riverside precinct
  • Enhance previous street beautification activities including tree lighting
  • Encourage more activity and new experiences in the street.
