Wagga Wagga’s new multisport cycling complex racing ready

Wagga Wagga’s new $12 million multisport cycling complex at Pomingalarna Reserve was officially opened today.

The complex on the city’s western outskirts caters for competitive and recreational cyclists and features a criterium track, BMX track, jump tracks and pump tracks, cycling education area, velodrome and supporting infrastructure.

Council worked in close consultation with local First Nations women to ensure the development was respectful and representative of Pomingalarna’s significance to Wiradjuri cultural heritage and with stakeholders to deliver a project that met the sporting needs of the community as well as incorporating the cultural importance of the site into the complex.

The complex provides the Riverina with a world-class venue for elite cycling events.

The project was funded through a $7 million grant from the NSW Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Construction of the Multi Sport Cycling Complex is now complete.

The project is in the closure stage.

New BMX track nearing completion

Construction of the 5 metre and 2.5 metre starting ramps of the BMX track are complete. The 2.5 metre ramp will be extendable to 8 metres for major events. Both ramps are covered by shelters and feature ProStart Gates from the USA.

The track is made up of four straights totaling 400 metres and will have a polymer finish and asphalt corners. It will be lit with 300 lux lighting and has spectating space around the track.

The project is expected to be complete in February 2022.

Complex on track for completion by April 2022

Construction of the multisport cycling complex is on track for completion in April 2022, weather permitting.

The community building and asphalt to the velodrome and criterium track are complete. As is detailed earthwork, shelter and concrete for the BMX track start mounds.

Finishing works across the complex such as storm water drain shaping, velodrome line-marking, and landscaping are in progress.

BMX track works ramping up

Bulk excavation is nearing completion as works ramp up at the new BMX track at Wagga Wagga’s Multi Sport Cycling Complex on Pomingalarna Reserve.

Contractors moved their heavy machinery on to the track site this week and have made significant progress with construction of the 5-metre and 2.5-metre starting ramps.

Berms and various other elements are also being shaped up in line with the track design by Dirtz Australia.

The track has been designed to AusCycling certification standards. The 2.5 metre start ramp will be extendable to eight metres for major events. Both ramps will be covered by shelters and will feature ProStart Gates from the USA.

The track - made up for four straights totalling 400 metres - will have a polymer finish and asphalt corners. It is also being lit with 300 lux lighting with spectating space provided around the track.

Practical completion date for the project is April 2022, weather permitting.

Council is urging community members to stay clear of the construction site.

Cycling complex works rolling along

Progress works are now 80 per cent complete and on target for completion by early next year.

Construction on the BMX track has started and work towards finishing the criterium track and its three loops continues at a solid pace.

The final asphalt top on the 333 metre velodrome is expected to be laid next week and will add to the completed elements of the cycling park which include the pump and jump tracks, the education park and mountain bike trails.

Light towers around the velodrome and along the criterium track have also been installed with final fit-out of the community building underway.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Asset Planner Ben Creighton this week provided an update on the project, which is jointly funded by a grant from NSW Government's Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund ($7 million) and the City of Wagga Wagga ($5 million).

Vehicle access to Bagley Drive temporarily restricted

Work to upgrade Bagley Drive at Pomingalarna Reserve will be carried out between 7am and 5pm, from Tuesday 31 August to Thursday 2 September, weather permitting.

During the works Bagley Drive will be intermittently closed to vehicles and access to the Wagga City Golf Club will be restricted. Traffic control will be in place. Pedestrian access to the reserve will be maintained.

Work to upgrade Bagley Drive at Pomingalarna Reserve will be carried out between 7am and 5pm weekdays, 4-18 August, weather permitting

During the works Bagley Drive will be intermittently closed to vehicles and traffic control will be in place. Vehicular access to the golf course and pedestrian access to the reserve will be maintained.

We ask that visitors to the reserve be aware of plant and machinery operating in the area and to please follow the designated access route provided.

The upgrade is part of the Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex – Stage 2 project.

BMX track to complete cycling complex works

Construction of a BMX track with lighting at the Multisport Cycling Complex on Pomingalarna Reserve will be completed early next year to finalise the entire project.

An additional $2.8 million funding to enable Stage 2 was formally endorsed by councillors at the 26 July Ordinary Meeting which paves the way for the full completion of the project.

Stage 1 is now 75 percent complete and is due to finish by the end of this year, weather permitting. Contractors will stay on site after December to finish the development’s second stage.

75 percent of project now complete

Council contractors have achieved significant progress in recent months with the opening of the pump track, jump track and mountain bike loop.

Progress on the community building has seen the roof installed, services fit out complete, external brickwork and internal walls complete. Fittings, fixtures and finishes work is now underway.

Earthworks and pavement construction on the velodrome is finished, landscaping is nearing completion and signage has been installed in the learn-to-ride space.

Works are scheduled to finish at the end of this year, weather permitting.

New tracks open at Complex

Three key sections of the Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex are now open to the public.

The Jump Track, Pump track, and Mountain Bike Playground Loop were opened for the community to enjoy on Friday 28 May.

The Pump Track is a short loop of rollers and berms for bike riders and is designed to maximize your momentum so you can ride it with minimal pedalling.

The Jump Track is a compacted earth track, with three corridors to choose from; easy, medium and hard, Each track has four jumps.

Easy: Table top jumps, 1.2 metres high

Medium: Gap jumps, 1.6 metres high

Hard: Gap jumps, 2 metres high

The Playground Loop is a 1.5 kilometre compacted earth trail. The loop has six features which riders can choose to attempt or ride around - two table top jumps, a flip-flop berm, a seesaw, log rides, rock step downs and a bridge.

The tracks are located west of the new velodrome, which is currently under construction.

Access to Pomingalarna Reserve temporarily restricted

The main entrance to Pomingalarna Reserve will be closed between 7am and 5pm from Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 March while we carry out necessary stormwater infrastructure works. During the works, Bagley drive will be closed to traffic. Parking and access will be possible from the western side of the reserve.

Access to Pomingalarna Reserve temporarily restricted

The main entrance to Pomingalarna Reserve will be closed between 8am and 4pm on Tuesday 2 March 2021 while we lay a new storm water pipe as part of the Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex project. The closure affects Bagley Drive from just past the City Golf Club entrance/exit to the reserve carpark. During this time the reserve can be accessed from the western side.

Pump track closed for maintenance

The pump track at Wagga Wagga's Multisport Cycling Complex will be closed for maintenance until 15 March, weather permitting.

Temporary fencing will be in place around the track until the work has been completed.
