Understanding your waste charges
Local councils are responsible for providing waste and recycling services to households, ensuring domestic waste is managed safely and sustainably.
Under the Local Government Act 1993, councils must apply an annual Domestic Waste Management Services Charge (DWMSC) to each property where the service is available. This charge, shown separately on your rates notice, must reflect the reasonable cost of providing these services.
The charge covers, but it is not limited to:
- Weekly kerbside general waste collection
- Fortnightly recycling and green waste collections
- Bulk waste services
- Maintenance of waste facilities and equipment
- Community education on waste and resource recovery
Do I have to pay the charge if I don't use the waste service?
Yes. The Act requires councils to levy the charge on all parcels of rateable land for which the service is available, whether or not it is actually used. It is considered that all property owners should contribute to the current and future provisions of waste services.
Household kerbside service waste charges
Kerbside waste charges are reviewed annually in line with the Fees and Charges Policy and Long Term Financial Plan. The Domestic Waste Management Service Charge is payable by the property owner and appears on the owners rates notice.
Residents under rental agreements within the collection area automatically receive this service as this charge is payable by landlords. If you are unsure if your rented property receives this service please contact Wagga Wagga City Council on 1300 292 442 or your rental agency.
