Development Application Exhibition FAQs
Whether a development application (DA) is publicly notified depends on the type of development and its potential impact.
- Most standard DAs are placed on Council’s website and nearby property owners are notified in writing for at least 14 days.
- Smaller residential works, like new dwellings, additions or outbuildings, are usually notified for 7 days.
- Larger or higher-impact developments are notified for 28 days and may also require a sign at the site.
- Modifications or reviews are notified in the same way as the original application (if it was notified).
Some minor developments, such as boundary adjustments, internal alterations, or compliant single-storey dwellings, may not need public notification. However, Council can still choose to notify neighbours if it believes the development could have an impact.
You can find more information about which applications require public notification on our Requirements for Notification and Exhibition page.
Council notifies property owners and occupants who may be affected by a proposed development. In most cases, this includes all adjoining properties (those that share a boundary or are directly across a road, pathway, or driveway).
If a property is more than 1 km away and unlikely to be affected, it will not be notified. Council also considers other factors, such as privacy, noise, overshadowing, traffic, stormwater, heritage impacts, and visual impact, to decide whether additional nearby properties should be notified.
Find out more about how Council determines who is notified on our Notifying Owners and Occupiers page.
The length of time a development application (DA) is open for comment depends on the type of application and its potential impact.
- Most standard DAs are open for 14 days.
- Smaller residential works, like new dwellings or additions, are open for 7 days.
- Larger or higher-impact developments, such as designated or integrated development, are open for 28 days and may also require a site sign.
- Modifications or reviews are open for the same period as the original application (if it was notified).
Exhibition periods are counted in calendar days but excludes the period between 20 December and 10 January. If the closing date falls on a weekend or public holiday, the period is extended to the next working day. For significant or complex applications, Council may extend the exhibition period at the discretion of the assessing officer.
