Council is committed to supporting safe buildings and protecting the community from fire risk.

Fire safety requirements apply across all types of development, including residential, commercial, industrial and public buildings, helping to ensure that people can respond safely in the event of a fire.

Fire safety applies not only when a building is first designed and constructed, but throughout its entire life:

  • New buildings must be designed and built to meet current fire safety standards before they can be occupied.
  • Existing buildings must be properly maintained so that fire safety systems continue to operate effectively over time.

The building owner is responsible for maintaining fire safety measures. In strata properties, the owners’ corporation or body corporate carries this responsibility.
