GATHERING PEOPLE: CANOPIES AND CUSHIONS

CROSS-CULTURAL TEXTILES WORKSHOPS

Gathering is a textile technique for adding ease and comfort to our clothes. It is also an old Irish proverb that speaks of the care and comfort to be found in the shelter and spaces of each other’s company. Sometimes it also refers to gathering our thoughts to find a solution to a puzzle.

The Gathering People cross-cultural textile workshops led by artists Kerrie Rudd and Julie Montgarrett aim to explore the many ways that gathering matters. How reclaimed cloth can be re-made in a collaborative design process, to create a welcoming, gathering space for everyone during the FUSION BOTANICAL multicultural festival in October this year.

A series of guided approaches, using recycled materials, each workshop will explore the ways that forms of colourfully dyed, embroidered and appliqued large-scale canopies and inventive textile cushion-like forms can create a welcoming space for everyone to share.

No textile skills or knowledge required, and all materials and tools provided.
