Environmental programs and initiatives
Council is continually implementing and developing new sustainable programs and initiatives that the community can partake in to help the environment.
One Tree For Me
The 'One Tree for Me' campaign is an action under Council's Biodiversity Strategy: Maldhangilanha 2020-2030 and aims to get 65,000 seedlings planted in our local area over a period of 6 years. That is one seedling for every resident. This is being achieved through a mix of activities including:
- Free seedling giveaways
- Community tree planting activities on community land
- Supporting schools through Planet Ark's Schools Tree Day campaign
For more information head to One Tree for Me webpage.
Bomen Revegetation Project
The Bomen Revegetation Project aims to address the impact of climate change and promote biodiversity through the planting of over 50,000 seedlings in the Bomen area. The project is funded by Spark Infrastructure in partnership with Westpac following local investment in the 120MW Bomen Solar Farm. Additional financial support and project management of the Bomen Revegetation Project is being provided by Wagga Wagga City Council.
The Bomen Revegetation Project will cover a total area of 58 hectares and will support the protection and enhancement of local endangered vegetation communities and threatened fauna species through extending connections to existing remnant vegetation. Locally endemic species will be planted to provide food sources and habitat for fauna including many threatened species. For more information head to Bomen Revegetation Project webpage.
Community Cash 4 Cans
The Community Cash 4 Cans Recycling Trailer (CC4C Trailer) is available for FREE hire to help sporting, community and school groups collect eligible drink containers from their local events and transport to the Return and Earn depot to receive the donation for their club or group. Water Stations – Tap2Go
The Tap2Go program aims to increase access to free, safe, and healthy drinking water for residents and visitors, as well as reduce consumption of single use plastic water bottles that may end up as litter. This program is delivered by Riverina Water with support from Wagga Wagga City Council.
For more information and locations visit our Tap2Go webpage.
Home Energy Efficiency Kits
Wagga Wagga residents can now loan a Home Energy Efficiency Kit to audit energy and water efficiency in their homes. The program comes under the response to Wagga Wagga’s 52 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions that comes from energy usage alone. Individuals from the community are now able to borrow the kit from Wagga Wagga City Library for a period of 28 days with a renewal at 14 days. The test results from the kits will prompt individuals to make minor yet impactful changes that can bring huge financially and environmental benefits.
